Nao pressed her back against the cold stone wall, fingers trembling—not from fear, exactly, but from the effort of holding a third spell in reserve while two others crackled between her knuckles. Falin roared ahead, cleaving at the chitin-armored thing that had ambushed them. Lante's light flickered, mending a gash on Chilchuck's shoulder. And somewhere behind them, the smell of seared meat and black pepper drifted up from Maru's little campfire, absurd and wonderful. "Nao! The left flank!" Falin bellowed. She did not need to be told twice. The air split with a crack of thunder, and the creature's left leg simply ceased to exist. Nao straightened her collar, wiped a smear of soot from her cheek, and muttered, "I do hope the next one is less tedious." Then she grinned, because the firelight caught Maru's face, and he was nodding at her, and that was enough.
