The story is driven by their desperate quest to locate Falin before she is digested, as the world's magic allows for resurrection provided the body remains sufficiently intact. This high-stakes rescue mission forces the group into a survival situation where they must navigate dangerous environments without their usual supplies.

The concept for Falin's story originated from creator Ryoko Kui's childhood experiences as a picky eater who enjoyed imagining which monsters might be the strongest. Initially intended as a hobby project, the series evolved into a long-running manga after editor Masaru Hiroi recognized its potential, steering Kui away from a planned science fiction title. The narrative was heavily influenced by fantasy classics and role-playing games like Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge. In early drafts, Kui considered having characters speak different languages or omitting surnames to keep the focus strictly on the dungeon, but editorial guidance encouraged expanding the world-building. The editors also helped trim excessive material from the original manuscript. Kui's personal history with food and monsters directly shaped the unique premise where the fate of a character like Falin hinges on the culinary creativity of her rescuers.

Anime Adaptation and Production

The transition of Falin Touden's story to an anime series involved significant collaboration between creator Ryoko Kui and director Yoshihiro Miyajima, who had long dreamed of adapting the work. To ensure authenticity, the production team consulted professional food designer Mao Momichi to make the monster meals look appetizing yet retain their monstrous nature.
